American Schutzhund

Friends of American Schutzhund is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization working to raise funds to benefit the efforts of American Schutzhund (AS).

Mission Statement

  • Friends of American Schutzhund is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization working to raise funds to benefit the efforts of American Schutzhund (AS).

  • The goal of AS is to test the ability of working dog breeds to withstand stress and continue to function in difficult situations.

  • AS uses the information gained through rigorous environmental tests, scent, obedience, and protection work.

  • The entire premise of the test is to help law enforcement, individuals, organizations in disaster work, military forces, and breeders to identify canines suitable to serve humanity, especially in the  United States.

Who We Are

The Board of Directors is made up of individuals who believe wholeheartedly that the success of American Schutzhund has a direct impact on our working dog community.

If not for the strong testing of the character of dogs in AS, the future of working dogs could be in jeopardy.

Half of the Inaugural BOD were members of the law enforcement community working as or directly with canine handlers.

Most of the Inaugural BOD have been involved in selecting and/or producing canines that have gone to work as law enforcement canines, Search and Rescue (SAR) and disaster dogs, Human Remains Detection dogs, and military dogs.

  • President:  Jan Nielsen

  • Vice President:  Cristi Ramos

  • Secretary:  Liz Schenk

  • Treasurer:  Victoria Byerly

No member of the Board of Directors receives compensation for their position.

What We Do And Why
It Is Important

The world of the working dog is not just a hobby for most people, it is a passion.

While the community is small, the impact is huge with working dogs impacting all aspects of life for most people at some point in their lives.

Every person who enters an airport has direct or indirect contact with TSA canines who search for explosives to keep us safe. There are handler/dog teams checking for smuggled contraband including invasive species, food, and plants at almost every entry to our country.

There are narcotic detection dogs working to combat drugs like Fentanyl from entering our country and our communities.

Police canines might track suspects and locate evidence but also help find lost individuals.

Dogs can detect cancer, help warn their owners before a seizure, and also protect a family from intruders.

All these tasks are important to American Schutzhund and are the basis of the tests each dog is evaluated on.

It is our mission to make sure there are dogs capable of continuing these valuable roles by financially supporting AS.
